Common Core Mathematics:
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) are national targets that students should master by the end of the grade level. These standards were developed by national councils of educators to develop coherence across grade levels to prepare students for colleges and careers. Prior to CCSSM, Louisiana had Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) for end of year grade level targets; however, they lacked the progression needed for students to be successful in future mathematics. Now each year’s standards build on the prior year’s work.

Eureka or Engage NY, our current math curriculum resource, is aligned to the CCSSM. This resource was developed by teachers for teachers. Many of the strategies used are Singapore Math strategies that have been found to be successful in helping students develop a conceptual understanding of mathematics rather than memorizing steps or algorithms with little understanding. Some examples are number bonds, tape diagrams, and chip models to name a few. The following link has many resources on the strategies used in Eureka including helpful homework tips and videos at Great Minds Parent Support Page.
